Frequently Asked Questions
The symptoms of mania, hypomania, and depression can significantly affect your ability to work, maintain relationships, and carry out everyday tasks.
Manic & Hypomanic Episodes
During a manic episode, a person may experience extreme euphoria, surges of energy, rapid thinking, impulsive behavior, and an exaggerated sense of self-confidence. They might also become easily irritable, require significantly less sleep, talk faster than usual, and find it difficult to stay focused due to racing thoughts or frequent distractions. To meet the criteria for a manic episode, these symptoms must last for at least one week and cause noticeable changes in behavior observed by others.
Hypomanic episodes share many of the same symptoms as manic episodes but are generally less intense and must persist for a minimum of four days.
Depression
Major depressive episodes are characterized by feelings of profound sadness, fatigue, hopelessness, and a lack of interest in activities. Individuals may also experience changes in sleep and appetite (increase or decrease), feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and/or thoughts of death or suicide. In order to meet criteria for a major depressive episode, symptoms must last for a minimum of two weeks.
While bipolar disorder cannot be cured, there is hope — it can be effectively managed with a combination of therapy and medication. Medication management is often the initial step, as it helps stabilize mood swings and creates a foundation for success. With mood fluctuations under better control, individuals are more able to engage in counseling, apply coping strategies, and build lasting skills. Through therapy, you can challenge unhelpful thoughts, process past experiences, and develop greater self-awareness.
Many individuals with bipolar disorder benefit from couples or family therapy, which can help their loved ones better understand the condition and offer more effective support.
